Joint Labor Initiatives

We put a tremendous emphasis on a collaborative approach to safety, and we believe that the most effective safety programs are the ones employees develop locally to address potential risks specific to their tasks and location.

We have site safety teams at more than 100 terminals and yards that help identify and reduce human and environmental safety risks. These teams are chaired by union and management representatives and are comprised largely of union employees.

Each of BNSF's 10 operating divisions has a division safety team, where labor and management representatives help guide division safety processes and address issues raised by local site safety teams. BNSF employees are also represented in the system-wide Safety Assurance and Compliance Process Task Force, a joint safety improvement process that includes BNSF management and labor representatives.
